A pedestrian is now hospitalised with head injuries after he was stuck and pitched into a wall by a car after it collided with another vehicle at the corner of King Street and South Road last evening.
Injured is Sherwin Cato, 34, of Lot 101 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme.
He sustained injuries to the back of his head, the right side of his face and his arm, his sister Shondel told Stabroek News last evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
According to a driver who spoke to Stabroek News on the condition of anonymity, he observed a car proceeding north onto Croal Street from Manget Place at a “heavy speed,” while a Toyota RAV 4 was heading east along South Road near the King Street junction at approximately 6:30pm. The driver explained that the car ran into the RAV 4. “The speed what he did coming with, he couldn’t have really control he self,” the driver said, adding, “she (the RAV 4 driver) was cautioning, but the speed what he coming with, when he do see she, is when he lash she.”
Another eye witness added that the RAV 4 driver, identified as the daughter of Crime Chief Leslie James, Toshawn (only name offered), loss control, ending up on the edge of the South Road trench. In addition, the witness said after he noticed the RAV 4 going into the trench, he ran and kicked out the window and pulled the driver out, seconds before the entire vehicle entered the trench. The witness alleged that the driver of the car, who identified himself as Anand Persaud, failed to render any assistance to Toshawn, who was trapped in her car.
When approached for a comment, the visibly shaken woman said all she remembers is being ran into by Persaud, before hitting Cato.
Meanwhile, Persaud recounted that he was heading north from Manget Place onto King Street, when he saw Toshawn speeding along South Road, headed east. “By the time I apply to brakes, I already hit her,” he said. Moreover, said after he collided with her, Toshawn slammed into Cato, who then crashed into the wall of a building opposite the High Court on King Street.
Persaud noted that he had to bear the expense of transporting the injured man to the hospital and lambasted Toshawn for not rendering assistance. He also alleged that Toshawn told him that she was the daughter of James and refused to give him any contact information. Moreover, he voiced his disgust at the fact that he was told that he would have to stand the expense of towing his car to the Brickdam Police Station, while James’ daughter had her vehicle removed from the trench free of cost.
When asked whether he was speeding, Persaud said, “I was doing less than 60.”
Traffic ranks were seen taking statements from both drivers and after almost an hour, the RAV 4 was removed from the trench.
The entire front of Persaud’s car was damaged, while the damage to the other vehicle is yet to be assessed, since it had been under water for almost an hour.
