When the sun sets today, the bright lights of the Rose Hall ground will be switched on and the upcoming boxing stars of Berbice will look to outshine their respective opponents.
Anticipation is building ahead of the first ever boxing event to be staged at the venue and the fighters are gearing up for what is set to be an explosive evening of fistic entertainment on the Mark Thom Promotions card dubbed ‘Rose Hall Town Showdown’.
For the three professional bouts, 26 punch-filled rounds are anticipated for showdowns which have sparked a great deal of interest throughout the Ancient County as the organizers have pulled out all the stops to raise the profile of the open air event.
Light welterweight prospect and Rose Hall native, Kishawn ‘Pretty K’ Simon 2(1)-2-0 will be the drawing card for the fixture. He will face the former national lightweight champion, Revlon Lake 6(1)-12-2 in a six-round contest.
“It’s another challenge for me and whoever knows me know that I like challenges” Simon told Stabroek Sport recently. “I like to earn my respect, earn my credit and this is what it is. I’m just going to have some credit for knocking Lake out since I’m going after the knockout.”
Howard Eastman’s pupil will start as favourite against Lake, who has avoided defeat just once in his last eight bouts – a majority decision win over Cecil Smith in 2011.
“This is my hometown and this is my show,” Simon boasted. I have all the tools to win and come fight day I’m going to be victorious. Simon added that the match up with Lake “is going to show the potential that I have, I’m in the sport to be the world champion and pound for pound king, I’m going out to win and look spectacular doing it.
The Rose Hall Town Showdown will also feature Berbician pugilists, Derrick Richmond and Richard Williamson. Knockout artist, Richmond, will face James Walcott in a scheduled six-round super middleweight contest while Williamson matches gloves with Dillon Alicock for the vacant super bantamweight title. Tickets costs $2000 (ring side) and $1000 (general).
