Over 100 young people are now equipped with work and life skills, having completed some 4 to 5 weeks of training under the United States Agency International Development (USAID) Skills and Knowledge for youth Employment (SKYE) project.
A graduation ceremony was held at the Guyana Red Cross Society Compound at Eve Leary on Friday, where 107 youths mainly from regions 3, 4 and 6 received certificates for having successfully completed the ‘Work Ready Plus’ and ‘Work Ready Now’ curricula, as part of the SKYE project.
The training focused on some of the basics required in the work environment such as timeliness, financial management, integrity, and professionalism.
Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy in Georgetown, Bryan Hunt, congratulated the graduants and stressed the importance of the training.
“You’re now equipped with the skills that are very relevant today. Regardless of your future plans—opening your own business, seeking employment, or at some point continuing your education—these skills are necessary… These skills aren’t skills that you’ll only need today or for a year or two from today, you’ll need them all your life. They will empower you to face challenges and take advantage of opportunities, and will contribute to the betterment of yourself, your community and Guyana as a whole,” Hunt said.
Chief of Party for SKYE Fiona Wills explained that the project also focused on meeting the needs of youths who were in dire need of a second chance in life while providing a chance for them to improve themselves.
