A Corentyne fisherman was yesterday refused bail in the Whim Magistrate’s Court after he was charged with two counts of attempted murder.
Ian Sarawati, 30, of lot 91 Bush Lot, Corentyne, Berbice appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh to the charges that on December 11 at Whim, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Serojini Isaacs, 19, and Nelawattie Isaacs, 37, with intent to commit murder. Sarawati was not required to plead.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sherriff objected to bail. He explained to the court that both victims are still hospitalized and Nelawattie Isaacs was critical at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Sarawati’s attorney Rodwell Jagmohan told the court that his client has a fixed place of abode, owns the property where he lives and also owns a fishing boat and engine.
The objection to bail was upheld and Sarawati is expected to return to court on December 17 for report.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News understands that Nelawattie Isaacs was chopped across her head and Serojini Isaacs was dealt several chops about her face and feet. A female relative who witnessed the attack ran to get help and male relatives responded and managed to arrest the assailant and hand him over to the police.
The female relative said Serojini Isaacs had ended a four-year relationship with the accused three weeks ago.
