The Scout Association of Guyana recently embarked on its annual Share-a-Meal Christmas outreach programme at the Dharm Shala in Georgetown and Berbice.
Every year the association undertakes this initiative which sees members visiting several communities and institutions to share hot meals to needy persons. This year, the Scouts again conducted this exercise which saw them visiting the New Nazareth Home in Carmichael Street, the Dharm Shala and several depressed areas. Persons were given hot meals, drinks, sweet treats and gifts, a press release said.
The Scouts association also welcomed new groups: the Tain Clifton and John Community Scout Group and the Sacred Heart RC Scout Group which were happy to join in the Share-a-Meal exercise.
The Scouts are also collaborating on an ongoing food can drive operated by the National Volunteer Council. The initiative entails collecting cans of food which will be sorted and distributed to the St Thomas Moore Home. Once the home has its quota any extra cans collected will be given to other homes.
The Scouts are reminding the public that it is able to host its charity initiatives through funding sources such as BBQs, walk-a-thons, car washes and other work and earn activities with various organisations such as the GMRSC.
Scouts are not authorised to solicit money from the public in the streets and as such the association advises the public that such practices are not authorised.
