Rohan Phillip Khan, accused of being one of the men who stole two safes containing over $3 million from the Superbet Sport Betting centre on Hinck Street, was charged with the heist yesterday and released on $200,000 bail.
Khan, 53, of 365 Section “B” Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, is charged with breaking and entering the Superbet Sport Betting on December 11 at Hinck Street, Georgetown, and stealing two safes containing over $3 million.
Khan pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Two.
His attorney applied for reasonable bail to be granted and said that Khan is willing to appear in any court to prove his innocence. He added that the safes are big and there is no way that one man can be accused of stealing not one but two safes.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objections to bail but that it a substantial sum if granted.
Khan was subsequently granted $200,000 bail on the condition that he lodge his passport at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts registry. He is expected to make his next court appearance on January 5 before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Although Khan was the sole person charged, the robbery was reportedly committed by four bandits and Stabroek News was told that they were in the building from 12:50 am to around 2:50am.
A source had told this newspaper that the men, who were spotted with a giant pliers, a crowbar and an unidentified sturdy metal object, made sure that the security cameras were dismantled before proceeding to hijack the safes. According to the source, the men were well covered in rags, stockings and socks.
