Topp XX became the first team to clinch a berth to the second round of the Upper Demerara Football Association/Banks GT Beer Cup knockout tourney, edging Amelia’s Ward Panthers by a 1-0 margin on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground.
Duquan Hercules’s ninth minute strike proved to be the difference between the two sides. Amelia Ward’s efforts in staging a possible comeback was dealt a severe blow as Jermain Batson was sent off in the 26th minute after picking up his second bookable offence in quick succession.
With the win, Topp XX will now faceoff with Snatchers FC of Lethem on Friday at the same venue. Prior to the commencement of the tournament opener, an opening which included a march past featuring the competing teams took place.
Making brief remarks at the opening ceremony were UDFA President Collis Gifth, Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters, GFF Technical Development Officer Lyndon France, Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon and Minister of Public Services Jennifer Westford.
The action continues tomorrow (Wednesday) at the same location with a doubleheader. In the opening matchup, Peacemakers FC will faceoff with Black 22 Goal-Getters from 18:00hrs while Blueberry Hill and Vasco FC will do battle at 20:00hrs.
