Sunburst Camptown secured their first win of the Georgetown Football Association/Banks Beer Cup, edging Santos FC by a 2-1 margin in their second group-C matchup on Monday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.
Anthony Sancho led the Campbellville-based side with a second half double in the 53rd and 61st minutes whilst Jamal Downer netted in a losing cause in the 90th minute. With the win, Sunburst Camptown move to three points from two games.
They will now face Beacons in their final group fixture. Meanwhile, due to the loss, Santos remain on three points from two matches and will lock horns with Mocha-based unit Riddim Squad in their final group match.
Contested in front of a small crowd at the Vlissengen Road and Carifesta Avenue location, Santos would craft the first attempt in the ninth minute as centre half Jermin Fraser headed his attempt over the crossbar after receiving a right side cross from a corner kick inside the area.
Veteran forward Gavin Wilson would then be denied by the custodian in the 22nd minute as his free kick was tipped smartly over the crossbar, much to the dismay of the Santos management staff.
The chances would continue to go abegging for Santos as Kevin McPherson directed his uncontested header from within the centre of the area inexplicably over the woodwork, after latching onto a perfectly lobbed Orin Yarde cross in the 45th minute.
Santos’s failure to capitalize on their opportunities wouldn’t go unpunished as Sancho broke the deadlock, placing his right-footed effort into the lower right hand corner from within the left side of the penalty area.
He would then complete his double eight minutes later compliments of a right footed attempt down the centre of the goal from inside the 18-yard box after receiving a Lance Rolston pass.
The introduction of Downer from the substitute’s bench would prove to be the catalyst for Santos as he found the back of the net from the centre of the area with a well-directed header into the right hand side, following a right side cross.
Downer almost levelled the score line one minute later, lashing his first time volleyed effort over the crossbar from within the right side of the box, after racing into the area to make contact with a cross from the right side of the park.
The match would end as it began with Santos displaying profligacy in front of the goal as Fraser missed a possible game tying conversion in the 90th+3 minute, directing his sliding effort following a cross into the right side of the box, just wide of the target.
In the opening matchup of the group, Riddim Squad and Beacons FC battled to a nil-all draw. Due to the stalemate, Riddim Squad move to the top spot in the group with four points while Beacons remain in the cellar position on one point.
The action continues today at the same venue with a group-D doubleheader. In the opening matchup, Pele FC will faceoff with Black Pearl FC from 18:30hrs while home side the Guyana Defence Force will lock horns with Flamingo FC from 20:30hrs.
