The Christopher Barnwell led side made it two wins in as many matches as they defeated the Vishaul Singh XI by 17 runs in a low scoring encounter of the second Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) limited overs trial match yesterday.
On a day where spinners dominated, national opener Rajendra Chandrika managed to construct a solid knock of 53 to guide Barnwell’s XI to 130 all out in 39.2 overs on a spinning Everest Cricket Club pitch. While Singh’s XI innings ended 17 runs short of their opponents’ total at 113 all out in 30 overs. After opting to take first strike, Barnwell’s XI suffered an early setback when they lost Robin Bacchus for five with the scorecard reading 12 for one. Kandasammy Surujnarine then joined Chandrika and the pair added 50 runs before the former was removed for 18. Tagenarine Chanderpaul (20) who batted at number four combined with Chandrika for the second highest partnership of the innings, a mere 26 runs, before Chandrika eventually was caught off the bowling of Steven Jacobs. His innings contained four boundaries and came off 83 deliveries.
After Chandrika’s dismissal, the remaining seven wickets fell for 32 runs.
Off-spinner Jacobs finished with 3-27 from his 10 overs. Singh’s XI in reply were hampered by some effective spin bowling from leg spinner Devendra Bishoo and part-time off spin bowler Royston Crandon, who combined to capture six wickets. Bishoo ended with 3-29 from nine overs while Crandon claimed 3-31 also from nine overs. Pacers Paul Wintz and Keon Joseph collected two wickets apiece.
Shimron Hetmyer top scored with 30 from 80 balls while Singh and Veersammy Permaul made 21 and 15 not out respectively.
The victories made it two in two for Barnwell’s XI after they won by two wickets the previous day.
The players will now break camp for the holidays.
