A cellular phone technician was on Friday placed on $60,000 bail after he denied two separate charges of fraudulent conversion, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that between April 1 and April 30 at Commerce Street, Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Alisha Freeman with one Samsung Galaxy 5 cellular phone valued $135,000 in order to repair it, Leroy Barker, 32, of 74 Castello Housing Scheme, fraudently converted same to his own use and benefit.
It is also alleged that between April 12 and April 30 at the same location, being solely entrusted by Deon Glasgow with one IPhone 4S cellular phone and two BlackBerry Torch 2 cellular phones, amounting to a total value of $449,000, in order to repair one and replace the two, Barker also fraudently converted same to his own use and benefit.
Barker who appeared unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to both charges read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 2.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones did not object to bail but asked for same to be substantial. Jones said Barker admitted to the police he converted the items to his own use and benefit.
Barker also alleged that Glasgow instructed him to sell the three phones so that he could buy another.
After listening to the submissions, Barker was placed on a total of $150,000 bail. However, after pleading with the court for a reduction, bail was reduced to $60,000.
The matter was adjourned to January 9 before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
