First half goals from Kurt Roberts and Quincy Holder propelled Mahaica Determinators to the quarterfinal round of the Stag Beer sponsored EDFA/ECFA/BFA knockout football tourney, downing Berbice unit Rosignol United 2-0 on Sunday.
Roberts found the back of the net in the 12th minute while Holder etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 29th minute of the hard-fought affair. In front of adequate viewership, Roberts gave Mahaica the early lead with a well-struck right sided free kick into the back of the net.
The woodwork would then deny the Berbicians six minutes later from levelling the score line as a Shane Gangoo right footed attempt from the left side of the field, came crashing off the base of the right upright.
Azuma Roberts would then waste a golden opportunity in the 27th minute to put the Mahaica outfit further ahead.
Breaking the off side trap in the centre of the field to latch onto a through pass, Roberts would be denied compliments of a well-executed challenge by the onrushing custodian after miss-controlling the ball within the area.
Nevertheless Holder would make up for Roberts’ miss two minutes onward, lashing his effort from within the centre of the area under the body of the advancing goalkeeper down the middle of the goal.
Javell Fraser would then squander a great chance in the 53rd minute to pull one back for the Rosignol, rifling his effort over the crossbar from the left side of the box with the empty net at his mercy after the ball fell fortuitously into his path.
Jade Robin would then see his goal-bound flat effort from the top of the box following a botched clearance, denied by the leg of the final Mahaica defender in the 69th minute with the goalkeeper on the ground and scrambling to get back into position.
The goals would continue to evade the Berbice side in the 81st minute as Fraser, from within the left side of the area, thumped his strike marginally wide of sneaking into the left corner, much to the disbelief of the gathering.
Due to the win, Mahaica Determinators will now lock horns with Cougars FC of Berbice on Boxing Day at the Victoria Community ground.
Meanwhile, in the second fixture, New Amsterdam United gave the home crowd something to cheer about, dismantling Timehri Panthers by a 10-1 margin. Adrian Adams led the assault with a five-goal haul on either side of half time in the 18th, 36th, 86th, 88th and 90th+1 minutes.
He was supported by Rondel Hazel who netted a first half double in the 29th and 45th+1 minute and Devon James who registered a second half brace in the 73rd and 84th minutes. Completing the score line was younger sibling Leonard Adams who scored in the 59th minute.
