The police yesterday said that four more persons have been found guilty of driving under the influence and fined $7,500 each.
The size of the fine has been described by some as not a sufficient deterrent to people who drink and drive. The naming of the guilty is part of a new campaign against driving under the influence.
In a release, police say that Govindiadat Sasenarine, of 69 Section ‘A’ No. 70 Village, Corentyne, was stopped and tested with a breathalyzer on 2014-12-07 while driving motor vehicle PRR 4062 on the Scottsburg Public Road, Corentyne. He was found to be above the legal limit for alcohol. He was charged and appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on 2014-12-11, where he pleaded ‘guilty’ and was fined $7,500.
The release further said that Raiesh Nevrang, of No. 76 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was stopped and tested with a breathalyzer on 2014-12-07 while driving motor vehicle HB 3172 on the Dukestown Public Road, Corentyne. He was found to be above the legal limit and was charged and appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on 2014-12-11, where he pleaded “guilty” and was fined $7,500.
Meanwhile, Devindra Umraw, of Windsor Forest, WCD, was stopped and tested with a breathalyzer on 2014-12-06 while driving motor vehicle PPP 6737 on the Providence Public Road, EBD. The police release said that he was found to be above the legal limit. He was charged and appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on 2014-12-12, where he pleaded “guilty” and was fined $7,500, the police said.
Also found guilty was Delvon Abrams, of 13 Princetown, Corentyne, Berbice. The police said that he was stopped and tested with a breathalyzer on 2014-12-07 while driving motor vehicle PNN 2399 on the Dukestown Public Road, Corentyne. He was found to be above the legal limit and appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on 2014-12-11, where he pleaded “guilty” and was fined $7,500.
Two other cases are pending. Police say that Harrynarine Ramdass, of No. 78 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was stopped and tested with a breathalyzer on 2014-12-07 while driving a motor vehicle on Dukestown Public Road, Corentyne. He was found to be above the legal limit and was to appear at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on 2014-12-11, but failed to appear and an arrest warrant has been issued for him.
Further, Ghanraj Fairdine, of 155 New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, WCD, was stopped and tested with a breathalyzer on 2014-12-06 while driving motor vehicle PLL 2179 on the Providence Public Road, EBD.
He was found to be above the legal limit, was charged and appeared at the Providence Magistrate’s Court on 2014-12-12, where he pleaded “not guilty”. The matter is continuing.
