Three youths who were allegedly armed with pieces of wood and severely thrashed a man were refused bail when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with the offence.
Michael Anthony Jhongoree, 22, Anthony Hanes, 24, and Shaquille Evans pleaded not guilty to the charge read to them by Magistrate Annette Singh.
On November 27, at Craig, East Bank Demerara the trio allegedly inflicted grievous bodily harm on Victor Dhanraj.
Their attorney pleaded with the magistrate to consider bail in a reasonable sum while stating that her clients went to the assistance of a young lady who was being chased by the virtual complainant.
Counsel added Evans also had sustained injuries which needed medical attention while noting the men had no previous convictions and do not pose a flight risk.
Prosecutor Michael Grant, however, objected to the three accused being granted bail based on the seriousness of the offence.
Grant noted that the defendant is still hospitalised and is in a serious condition.
The prosecution’s submission also stated that the virtual complainant was confronted by the defendants at about 9:20 h while walking on the Craig Public Road.
A misunderstanding occurred and the three men armed with pieces of wood dealt the defendant several lashes about his body which resulted in Dhanraj being left in a semi-unconscious state.
The injured man was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is still a patient.
The matter was reported and investigations led to the arrest of the defendants, Grant stated.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld and the three men were remanded to prison until December 29. Their matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
