Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday remanded Anthony Franklyn to prison after he denied the charge of armed robbery.
It is alleged on December 24 at Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, Franklyn, of Lot 70 North Ruimveldt, being armed with a gun and in the company of another, robbed Navindra Persaud of one gold chain and a quantity of cash, amounting to $110,000.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on the day in question at about 03:15 hrs, the virtual complainant was walking along Seaforth Street wearing a gold chain valued $90,000 and with $20,000 in his pocket when the defendant approached him, placed a gun to his head and demanded the items mentioned. The men grabbed the items from Persaud and then attempted to make good their escape on a waiting motorcycle. However, Franklyn was caught by the police while the other made good his escape on the motorcycle.
Grant objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence and the penalty it attracts. He also added that fact that a firearm was used to carry out the robbery.
The magistrate refused to grant bail to Franklyn and he is to make his next court appearance on January 2 before Magistrate Ann McLennan.
