The body of a two-year-old girl of Grant Freetown, Lower Pomeroon River was yesterday pulled out of the Pomeroon River after she went missing when the boat she was travelling in capsized on Christmas Day.
Dead is Osmin Marcus. Stabroek News learnt that the incident occurred at around midday on Thursday. The child’s grandmother Osmin Welcome told Stabroek News that her granddaughter was in a boat powered by a 15 horsepower engine piloted by her mother. Marcus’ aunt and three cousins were also passengers in the boat at the time. “The engine start giving the mother problem so at the time a boat with a 75 (horsepower engine) was passing and she asked the girl to tow her boat. They already tie on the rope and everything to the other boat when she (Marcus’ mother) advance the motor and the boat start sinking,” Welcome related.
The woman added that the captain of the boat that was towing the smaller boat slowed but it was too late since the boat had already capsized.
“The two mothers tried to save all the children but by the time they start looking for Osmin she already deh gone down. The same boat that was towing them turn around and help them,” she said.
A search party was formed and family members immediately combed the area for the child. The body was recovered yesterday at around 2:45pm.
The police are conducting investigations.
