A miner was fatally stabbed after he attempted to settle a quarrel between his sister, his niece, and his niece’s reputed husband on Friday night, at Patentia, West Bank Demerara and the suspect is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Dead is Sunil Ramsundar, 39, of Patentia West Bank Demerara.
The police, in a release, stated that around 10 pm, Sunil Ramsundar was involved in an argument with another man, during which he was stabbed bout his body.
The release added that Ramsundar was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A family member, who witnessed the stabbing, told Stabroek News that on Friday night, her cousin Shelly, that cousin’s reputed husband Nyron called ‘One Eye’ and one of her aunts Savitree had a misunderstanding, during which Savitree was assaulted by the couple. “She [Savitree] was out in the track crying,” the eyewitness said. The track is a passageway between the houses where the relatives live.
Ramsundar approached his sister and enquired what had transpired and Savitree told him that ‘One Eye’ and Shelly had beaten her.
Subsequently, Shelly appeared and had an exchange of words, followed by a scuffle with Ramsundar before leaving, the eyewitness said. Ramsundar then “stand outside and start to curse, asking what was the problem,” the eyewitness added.
A few minutes later, Nyron and Shelly returned to the passageway where Ramsundar was standing. According to the eyewitness, who became emotional at this point, Nyron held Ramsundar from the back and was hitting him. Meanwhile, Shelly was in front of him striking his chest.
The eyewitness Zalena said she heard Ramsundar shout at his niece: “Shelly is dah wha yuh ah do me man?” only to have Nyron add, “Is not she alone is me too.”
It was just then that someone ran by shouting, “Is stab he get stab!”
Meanwhile, another of Ramsundar’s sisters Ramdai Ramsundar said that he was stabbed to the right side of his neck, left arm, chest and back. When asked whether anyone was consuming alcohol, Ramdai said not to her knowledge.
An overwhelmed Savitree told this publication that the last thing she remembers is being consoled by her brother after she related the beating she had endured at the hand of Shelly and Nyron.
Ramsundar, who recently returned from the interior where he worked as a miner, was described as a hardworking and peaceful man.
He leaves to mourn his four teenaged children.
