Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund (RNCF) has reached out to Lakemattie Ramjit, a young mother of four, whose family has been struck by a series of tragedies.
The organisation said in a press release that it visited Ramjit’s home at Rosignol, West Coast Berbice residence on December 24 after her plight was published in a local daily and caught the attention of Chief Executive Officer of the National Communications Network and Chairperson of the Radio Needy Children’s Fund, Molly Hassan.
Over a two-week period, Ramjit had lost her grandmother, her uncle was killed, her husband was charged with murder and remanded to prison and her newborn son died. Ramjit’s husband, a fishmonger, was the sole breadwinner for the family.
Hassan and a team from the RNCF presented a cheque for $25,000 to Ramjit’s mother, Prattiebha, who is assisting to care for the four children and five others for an ill relative.
The family received several food hampers and each of the nine children received Christmas presents, the release said. The woman expressed gratitude to the RNCF for its support during this difficult time, and Hassan pledged the organisation’s continued assistance to the family.
She said the RNCF will provide a monthly care package to ensure that the family has the basic necessities, the release said.
