This is the season for sharing and spreading the Christmas and holiday cheer.
On Christmas day, local distance ace, Alika Morgan continued her seven-year tradition doing just that.
Morgan team up with Payless Variety Store and Coach Leslie Blacks to spread some holiday cheer to some of the children at the Red Cross Convalescence Home in Durban Backlands.
The standout athlete took time to share out toys, candy and read Christmas stories to some of the children.
“Giving back to the community is something that is important as athletes,” said Blacks “They rely on the support of the community when they are competing, so whenever she is able to lend her support to better the community, it really feels good.”
The home has been in existence for over half a century, having first been opened on October 31, 1951 as the Princess Elizabeth Children’s Convalescent Home.
In March 1977, members of the Rotary Club of Georgetown and the Guyana Red Cross Society met to plan a new building, and almost a year later in February 1978, the club officially launched a fundraising campaign for the project. By June 7, 1980, the new Red Cross Children’s Convalescent Home was ready to be officially opened by then President LFS Burnham.
