In spite of the turmoil that engulfed the association in the earlier moments of the year, Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) President Collis Gifth believes the entity and by extent the sport nationally, are currently on the right path.
Speaking exclusively to Stabroek Sports, Gifth said:” I think despite the little turbulence they had in football during the early stages, I think football in the association and to a wider extent Guyana is finding a root and there are signs of improvement.
“I could basically say the latter part of the year was generally good for the association and with the success of our tournament so far, it even add more to it,” he added.
According to Gifth “Right now our main focus is on club structure. We believe once we get structured clubs the association will be properly structured. Even though it is an uphill task because resources are the problem, we still remain optimistic once we can put this in place the possibility exists the association will improve a lot.”
Questioned about the expectations for the impending season, he said: “Our primary focus is to have a structured league and that is not by recognition of the association only but everyone within the football fraternity is calling for a league in Linden.
“We trying to have an input in terms of making the league a success. We are hoping to start the season in February which will commence with the league.
“Apart from that we have a few other programmes we will be trying to implement. However, the league is expected to start in February and break during the April period because we will be staging a knockout tourney to culminate with the traditional Linden Town Week”.
“It is expected to be a busy year for football in Linden and once people are dedicated to the task, it is supposed to be a successful year in football,” he added.
