Three men and a minor were yesterday charged with armed robbery and remanded to prison.
Kenneth Ramsay, called `Short Man’, 28, of 23 Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant; Avinash Brijbasie, 18; Vijay Ramdharry called `Coco Boy’, 20, both of Lot 82 Tain Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice and a 15-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons made their first appearance before presiding Magistrate Charlyn Artiga in the Whim Magistrate’s court.
The charges alleged that Ramsay, Brijbasie and Ramdharry armed with a dangerous and offensive weapon, to wit a gun, robbed Gavindradat Sasenarine on December 23rd at Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice of two cellular phones: one Blackberry Z10 valued at $80,000 and one Coral phone valued $6,000 and $23,000 cash, a total value of $109,000, all property of Sasenarine.
The said charge also read that the trio during the same robbery, stole one Toyota Carina 212 motor car, PPP 1108 worth $1,400,000 and the property of Rajesh Ramsammy. An additional charge was also read to the trio, which alleged that on December 26 while being armed with a gun they attempted to commit robbery under arms.
A separate robbery under arms charge was also made out against Ramsay and the 15-year-old. It is alleged that on the 23rd of December, at Tain Settlement, while being armed with a dangerous and offensive weapon, to wit a gun, they robbed Balraj Surajnauth of one Blu Cellular Phone valued $60,000, property of Surajnauth.
After the charges were read, the quartet was not required to plead to the separate indictable counts. However, police prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sherriff objected to bail because of the nature and gravity of the offence. He also made an application to the court for the motor vehicle to be returned to the owner.
During the application, he said the vehicle would be photographed and this would be filed for evidence. The court has granted permission for the vehicle to be returned to the owner.
Magistrate Artiga upheld the objection to bail and the men were remanded.
For both robbery under arms charges, the accused are to return on the 21st of January 2014 at the Whim Magistrate’s Court and for the attempt to commit a felony they are expected to return on the 13th of January 2015 at the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
