Two men were yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of breaking into a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) outlet and stealing $1 million worth in office equipment.
The charge against Simon Primo of Lot 27 Alliance Road, Timehri and North Sophia resident Devon Brown, is that on December 29 they broke and entered the supervisory room of the GPL branch located at Sophia and stole two computers and one printer with a total cost of $1 million property of GPL.
The jointly-charged duo pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Devon Brown, 22, has four children.
Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that the two defendants led police on a high speed chase from Sheriff Street which ended in Sophia around 1.30 pm on Monday.
According to Grant, the chase ended when the car in which the men were driving became badly damaged after it ended up in a drain. The court heard that the men attempted to escape but were later apprehended by police.
Grant objected to bail stating that the items were recovered and that the defendants are wanted at the Kitty Police Station in relation to an armed robbery offence.
According to Brown’s attorney, his client was never in any high-speed chase. Primo was unrepresented.
Both men were remanded to prison until January 30 when they are expected to appear before Magistrate Ann McLennan at Court Two.
