Stable owners are calling on the executives of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) to act swiftly on the alleged infringement of the rules and animal cruelty which occurred on Sunday in the feature event of the PPP President’s Cup at the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club.
It is alleged that in the A and Lower one mile event, champion jockey for the day, Trinidadian Keran Razack illegally used probes to shock the Dark Bay mare, Princess She is Not at different intervals of the race.
Princess She is Not, owned by the Shariff Racing Stable went on to ‘shockingly’ upset Guyana’s premier thoroughbred Score’s Even by a half-length and pocketed $1.2M for its handlers.
One of the organisers of the event told this publication that an investigation and an official pronouncement will be made this week.
Deoroop among others, contend that the allegations which were caught on camera are unwanted in the ‘Sport of Kings’, noting that cheating along with animal cruelty has no place in horse racing.
The Simply Royal head honcho also called for a thorough inquiry and suitable punishment while in the same breath pointed out that a similar infringement of the rules recently occurred in Canada and the jockey was fined heavily and banned for 10 years.“We need an inquiry where the jockey, owner and trainer will be given a hearing,” said Deoroop.
“We have evidence that owner and trainer have knowledge of what took place, the trainer and the owner was there while he was putting the device on his finger and if you check the tapes he was not even whipping the horse, he was just shocking it.
“We cannot condone that kind of cruelty to these horses.”
Quizzed on how soon the investigation will be wrapped up, Deoroop stated that the Shariff Stable owners “has to bring back the jockey from Trinidad so hopefully by this weekend.”
On Sunday, the Shariff Racing Stable was crowned the top stable. Razack was victorious in three of his four races. (Emmerson Campbell)
