West Ruimveldt man granted bail over wounding charge

A West Ruimveldt man was yesterday granted $70,000 bail after he denied the charge of unlawfully and maliciously wounding another.

The charge against Michael Clarke, 22, of Lot 594 West Ruimveldt,

Michael Clarke
Michael Clarke

Georgetown is that on December 31 at West Ruimveldt, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Martin Riley.

Clarke pleaded not guilty to the charge read to him by Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 11.

His attorney Clyde Forde applied for reasonable bail. He said Clarke is not a flight risk and is just a peacemaker who was trying to make peace after an incident.

Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick objected to bail saying the offence is a serious one and the defendant and virtual complainant are neighbours. Bostwick added if bail is granted it is more likely that Clarke might tamper with the prosecution witness.

But he also added that if the court considers granting bail after his objection he would like conditions to be attached.

In delivering brief facts to the court, Bostwick said that during the course of the scuffle, the defendant pushed the VC into a louvre window causing him to sustain several cuts about his body along with some other injuries.

Clarke was placed on a bond to keep the peace until the conclusion of his trial and was granted $70,000 bail. He is expected to make his next court appearance on January 13.
