Dead animals on the roads a major problem in Corentyne

Dear Editor,

I normally operate a hire car plying the Rose Hall, Corentyne to New Amsterdam route, and every day there are any number of animals on the roadways. As you traverse these roads on a daily basis you can see dead animals right through; dogs are the number one roadkill, then cats and now cows. Cows and donkeys are everywhere.

Today (Jan 2, 2015) I was going up the Corentyne road and a herd of cattle was coming in the opposite direction. It was quite obvious that they were wild because one of them rammed the right headlamp of my car causing it to shatter. When I got out to try and get the brand information from the animal there was none, and of course he got up and ran away.

Now who is supposed to fix my car? The insurance companies in this country are no help. When I approached my insurance company they told me flat out I have “nothing” to get because third party policy only caters for the person on the street or the persons in my car since it’s registered as an ‘H’. And even if I had full coverage I would still get nothing because my damage would be under $200,000. This means that I have to smash my car so the damage comes to more than that amount before I can be compensated. When I asked the representative how this could be, she told me to ask Mr Sattaur. What kind of country is this?

Now when these animals get hit and die they are left there to rot and stink, even the large ones like cows and donkeys, etc. It seems to me nobody is doing anything in this country.

What good is paying insurance if you’re not compensated in an accident? Who is responsible for insurance companies in this country? Who is responsible for keeping the roadways clear of animals? If a cow is not branded can one catch it and do to it as one pleases?

Yours faithfully,
N Harrinandan
