A Timehri resident, who was dumped in a battered state along the Friendship, East Bank Demerara public road, succumbed while he was being taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital last Friday.
Istekar Khan, 26, of 116 Hyde Park, Timehri, was being transferred from the Diamond Hospital, where he had been taken by a police patrol after being picked up from the roadside at Friendship.
A Friendship resident told Stabroek News that he saw Khan being dumped out of a vehicle. He said when the vehicle pulled off, the battered man ran into the nearest yard for help, while screaming, “They gon kill me!”
The resident said the property owner refused to help Khan and chased him out of his yard. “He run up the road to other house but people didn’t help,” the man added.
Eventually, a police patrol came upon Khan and took him to the Diamond Hospital.
Meanwhile, Rita Khan said it was in the mortuary that she first saw her son for the new year. “I didn’t even get to see him until now,” she told Stabroek News
She had received a call from his girlfriend at around 1:45am on Friday morning. The couple had left their Timehri home to go to a party in Georgetown but when it was time to leave he had refused to go with her.
According to Rita Khan, the young woman called her and told her how her son was behaving and so she asked to speak to him but he refused to oblige her. She said she told his girlfriend to go home as she expected that the young man would eventually return home.
But the entire day passed and her son was not heard from. She said the next day she told his girlfriend to go to the police station and report him missing because it was strange that he did not return home or call.
When the woman went to the Grove Police Station, she then learned that they had picked up a male fitting the missing man’s description. She also learned that he had been pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Rita Khan said she found it strange that her son was picked up at Friendship. She also said he did not have any recent problems with anyone and she could not understand who would want to harm him.
