The University of Guyana (UG) is planning to upgrade its security after a break-in at a student dormitory at the Turkeyen Campus during the weekend.
Five rooms were broken into during the burglary of the New Building Society (NBS) Halls of Residence.
One student, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News she came back from home on Sunday and found her room ransacked. Based on her observation, the thief/thieves used a metal object to open her door and one Jalousie door was removed completely.
The student said the items stolen from her, including her laptop and groceries for this month, were valued at $234,500 in total.
She could not say if anyone was in the dormitory when the burglary took place.
“I never expected something like this to happen because UG has a very strict security system,” she said, while noting that no one can even enter the UG compound unless they have a pass and visitors usually have to state their business.
When Stabroek News visited the NBS dormitory, the doors appeared to have been tampered with and the bottom part of the Jalousie door was removed.
UG Public Relations Officer Paulette Paul subsequently said that UG plans to step up its security and more cameras will be installed around the Turkeyen Campus compound.
Paul said the police and Massy Security are currently looking into the matter. The head of UG’s security refused to comment on the theft.
