A 19-year-old Mahdia resident was yesterday remanded to prison over the New Year’s Day murder of Mahdia miner Andre Britton who, before being stabbed to death, had upbraided some young men for throwing firecrackers into his yard.
Rochilo Maison was not required to enter a plea to the charge which stated that on January 1 at 111 Miles Mahdia, he murdered Britton.
No facts other than that stated in the charge were presented to the court.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry then informed the unrepresented teen that he would be remanded to prison.
His matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for January 19.
Police in a press release had said that Britton, 50, of 111 Miles Mahdia, Potaro, died at about 0130h on New Year’s Day.
Investigations, police say, revealed that Britton had earlier confronted a man, during which the man was assaulted, for throwing squibs into his yard.
According to the police, the man later returned and stabbed him about his body.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia hospital.
