An 18-year-old man was yesterday refused bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry accused of unlawfully wounding another on New Year’s Day.
The allegation against Akeem Evans read that on January 1 at Norton Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Paul Waterman with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm.
He pleaded guilty to the charge read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail. He said on the day in question at about 10:30 hrs the victim and the accused had a misunderstanding. The accused left and returned armed with a cutlass with which he dealt Waterman several chops to his left hand. Waterman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted as a patient and later discharged. Evans was subsequently arrested and charged.
The court also heard that Evans was charged before with similar offences.
Meanwhile, Evans told the court during his explanation, “Me and him had a misunderstanding and he box me two times. The next day he tell me I could go and report he or do what I want because he got police friends. When I go the station they just charge me.”
He was remanded and is to make his next court appearance on January 12.
