Striking workers of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) remain optimistic that normalcy will return very soon as wage negotiations continue between their union and the agency’s management.
Some GGMC staffers resumed picketing outside of the agency’s Brickdam headquarters on Tuesday to renew their call for increased wages, while saying the GGMC breached the agreed terms of resumption by failing to address the matter by the 31st of December last year.
The GGMC however, said that it has upheld the agreement and deemed the strike as “illegal,” while noting that negotiations were still ongoing.
Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) Senior Industrial Relations Officer Dennis English yesterday said the situation remains the same as industrial action continued. He also assured that the strike will continue until demands are met. “We haven’t received any positive answer from management but we hope things return to normalcy soon,” he added.
Previous negotiations had broken down and saw strike action by workers last month before the Ministry of Labour intervened and an interim payout for workers was agreed. Workers resumed duties soon after while negotiations restarted.
