Linden man charged over cutlass assault on wife

A Linden man is now a remanded prisoner after he was charged with beating his wife with a cutlass and told a court that he had no other place to live.
Colin Sampson, of One Mile, Wismar, told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that he did not harm his wife, Christina Sampson.

But according to Prosecutor Michael Grant, on January 5, Sampson went home drunk. He said the man and his wife ended up in an argument and she was given several lashes about her body with a cutlass. He also said the man threatened to kill his wife.

Grant objected to bail and he told the court it was not the first time violence occurred in the couple’s home. He asked the court to adopt a zero tolerance behaviour when it comes to spousal abuse.
When the Chief Magistrate asked Sampson if he had any other place to live, he said, “Me ain’t got nobody. Nobody ain’t cook for me.”

She then asked him two more times but his statement was repeated and as a result he was sent to jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 13, when the matter will be called at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
