CAPE TOWN, South Africa, CMC – West Indies were special guests of the legendary Archbishop Desmond Tutu as a special morning meeting recently in this coastal city.
Several members of the team were joined by Archbishop Tutu and members of his staff at the Tutu Legacy Foundation at the V&A Waterfront, as the South African freedom icon spoke on his love for the game of cricket and his passion for people.
The West Indies delegation was led by team manager Sir Richie Richardson and T20 captain Darren Sammy.
“What an amazing moment to meet such a great man and have a conversation with him and get worlds of wisdom from him,” Sammy noted.
“He has such vast knowledge on a wide range of issues and it was simply an eye-opener to sit and listen to him as he spoke to us. You could see the passion as he spoke and we were truly inspired.” Sammy added: “He also has a remarkable memory and recalled so many of the legends and heroes of West Indies cricket, the rich history and what it meant to the people of South Africa.”
Archbishop Tutu, 83, was one of the leaders in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He is also Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town.
He visited the Caribbean in 2003 along with Nelson Mandela as part of the South African bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
