In a development that should surprise no one the battle for control of Guyana’s cricket continued on Sunday with the staging of the Essequibo Cricket Board elections won by incumbent Fizul Bacchus and cries of unfair play by challenger Prince Holder.
Bacchus, on Sunday was reportedly returned unopposed during the board’s Biennial General Meeting (BGM), but according to a report in another section of the media Holder questioned the “credibility” of the process and, the results.
Contacted yesterday for a comment on Holder’s claims that the elections were not held in accordance with the constitution of the ECB, Bacchus adamantly declared that the results were binding as there will not be another elections.
“That’s the end of the elections! We dealt with everything under the ECB’s constitution which said that the office bearers will be elected at the Biennial General Meeting (BGM)”, declared Bacchus when contacted by Stabroek Sports.
At Sunday’s BGM, Bacchus and most of his executives were returned to their posts unopposed while challenger for the presidency Holder cried foul.
When questioned about Holder’s claims, Bacchus said that they were “Totally false.”
“I had a guy videotape the elections. The behavior by Holder was very bad, if he was aspiring to be president he should not have been behaving in that manner.”
Meanwhile, Holder in an invited comment yesterday, said that himself, along with the Pomeroon faction are in the process of seeking an audience with recently appointed Cricket Ombudsman Dr. Winston McGowan owing to some of the area boards’ in Essequibo not being able to hold their elections.
“The clubs in Pomeroon wrote asking for elections and he (Bacchus) didn’t keep any. I’m putting together a report over the next few days for Mr. McGowan because Pomeroon must have elections before Essequibo and that didn’t happen so they will be supporting me with my report.”
Contacted for a comment Dr. Mc Gowan yesterday said that he will not be engaging in anymore talks with the media and he will do what he is appointed to do and make the necessary contacts with the media when the time is right.
He did confirm that he is indeed has the authority to deal with electoral affairs of any of the three constituent boards; Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice, as the three county boards play an integral part in the Guyana
Cricket Board (GCB).
