Five persons were on Monday charged with armed robbery following a recent attack on a couple at Black Bush Polder, Berbice.
The five accused—four men and a woman—denied the charge when they appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga at the Whim Magistrate’s Court and they were released on $250,000 bail.
Those charged are Premchand Kallicharran, called ‘Boysie,’ 27, of Lot 81 Grant 1780 Crabwood Creek; Carlton Singh, 23, of Grant 1802 Crabwood Creek; Delroy Parks, 28, called ‘Sticky,’ of Cromarty Farm, Corentyne; Antonio Morgan, called ‘Rasta,’ 34, of Lot 427 No. 51 Village, Corentyne; and Cindy DeVair, 19, of Lot 44 Race Course, Springlands, Corentyne.
They are accused of robbing Lusignan vendor Hemraj Singh and his wife at the entrance of Black Bush Polder.
Singh, 54, and his wife, both of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, were reportedly robbed of $180,000, their car key and a cellular phone.
As the Singhs were about to turn into the Black Bush Polder access road, a car stopped in their path and two men armed with guns emerged and instructed them to hand over their valuables.
However, after the robbers had fled the scene, police were alerted and set up a road block at No. 51 Village, where they saw the suspects’ vehicle approaching. However, the vehicle diverted along an alternative route. After observing this, the police launched a search and were able to apprehend the car. When the car was stopped, only two persons were inside: the driver and a woman said to be DeVair.
After the charge was read, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sheriff objected to bail due to the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. He also stated that the crew was armed with dangerous weapons during the attack.
However, Magistrate Artiga placed them on bail and adjourned the case until January 29.
