In 2014, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corpora-tion (GPHC) had more than 6,000 babies delivered at its institution and examined more than 10,000 women through its Obs-tetrics and Gynaecology Antenatal Clinic.
According to a GPHC press release, the facility delivered the highest number of babies as compared to other hospitals due to its status as a national referral hospital. During 2014, the facility recorded a total of 6,179 deliveries of which 94 were stillbirths and the remaining 6,085 were successful.
Further, the GPHC statistics revealed 1,332 of the total deliveries in 2014 were to teenage mothers between ages of 14 and 19. For the same period, the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology Antenatal Clinic examined a total of 10,813 pregnant women which excluded those from its clinics based in Kitty, Campbellville, Industry and Enmore.
The maternity ward at the institution admitted 9, 735 patients with a total of 11 maternal deaths recorded, five of which were referrals from other health institutions.
Marina Persaud, the report said was the last maternal death in 2014.
During the month of December, the hospital saw an increase in the number of deliveries as compared to the preceding months with a figure of 610 births.
More specifically, between December 24, 2014 and January 1, 2015, 168 babies were delivered.
The GPHC, the release said, extends condolences to the bereaved families of all the women who passed away as a result of complications sustained during child birth.
