Recently crowned Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer champs Alpha United, officially received their prizes yesterday from Banks DIH Limited at a team presentation ceremony held at the company’s Thirst Park headquarters.
The ‘Hammers’ claimed their second title after brushing aside the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 3-0 in the final on New Year’s Day at the National Stadium in Providence, securing the $3,000,000 first prize and championship trophy.
For their showing the GDF collected the second place trophy and $1,500,000. Pele FC which defeated arch-rivals Western Tigers 1-0 in thethird place playoff to walk away with $1,000,000 and the respective trophy also received their prize. Western Tigers for their efforts received the fourth place accolade and $500,000.
Brian Choo-Hen, Banks Beer Brand Manager said “Congratulations to Alpha United and to GDF, better luck next year as well as Pele and Western Tigers.” He further said, “We look forward to continued support of the tournament and trust that all the teams will work hard to create that competitive spirit and edge.”
Asked about the success of the event compared to the previous edition, Choo-Hen said, “It was a very successful tournament, 16 teams only from Georgetown participated against the 32 teams from last year but we still had that competitive spirit.” According to Choo-Hen “Because of the fact it was only Georgetown teams, our support was mostly from Georgetown. We also had several tournaments running side by side such as the ‘West Side’ Vitamalt Plus and GT Beer tournament in Linden.”
Questioned if Banks DIH will continue to support the event, he said “Indeed it was a great tournament and we look forward for more support. Banks DIH Limited is committed to the development of sports and Banks is committed to the event for years to come.”
