The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has signed a friendship agreement with a Chinese hospital that will strengthen its surgical capacity.
The agreement, proposed by the Jiangsu Province Subei People’s Hospital of China will be mutually beneficially to both institutions with Guyana receiving a boost in its spinal surgery capacity. Although the terms of agreement are still to be developed and finalised, the pact will see Guyana receiving a donation of equipment and will allow for visiting exchanges of medical professionals between the two countries, the GPHC said in a statement.
The agreement was signed by the head of a six-person delegation Sun Jie, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Subei People’s Hospital and the Chief Executive Officer of the GPHC, Michael Khan at the GPHC Resource Centre on Thursday. Jie in her remarks, said the cooperation will be beneficial to the citizens of both countries and hope more fields of cooperation can be established in the future.
Health Minister Dr Bheri Ramsaran also met with the delegation prior to the signing ceremony and accepted a plaque presented. He alluded to the agreement and pointed out that over the years the Chinese medical brigades have brought new skills to Guyana. Dr Ramsaran noted that the Chinese medical teams have made a significant impact at the GPHC and the Linden Hospital Complex and requested that they consider expanding their services to other hospitals.
According to the statement, the 11th Chinese medical brigade that came here in June comprised orthopaedic specialists, plastic and burn surgeons, general surgeons, nephrologists, ophthalmologists, gynaecologists, paediatricians and persons with other vital medical skills.
Zhang Limin, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana also attended the unveiling ceremony.
