A man was yesterday remanded to prison after being arraigned on charges of break and enter and larceny and escaping from police custody.
It is alleged that on the night of October 28, 2011, at East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, Edgar Blackman broke and entered the house of Quincy Bavaghems and stole a quantity of valuables amounting to $436,000.
It is also alleged that on August 26, 2013, while in custody assisting with investigations regarding a narcotics charge with Constable 21753 Zakier and heading to the Georgetown Public Hos-pital, Blackman escaped.
Blackman pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Prosecutor Michael Grant, who objected to bail, said Blackman previously escaped while in custody for narcotics and if bail is granted he may not return for trial.
He also noted that the man had pending matters before the court and it is alleged that while he was on bail for those he committed the other offences. Grant further noted that Blackman was also convicted for a similar offence.
The unrepresented man, however, denied this claim and said he was only ever charged.
Blackman was subsequently refused bail and the matter was adjourned until February 13.
