With the highly-anticipated Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) elections set for later this month the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has indicated that they are currently seeking guidance from recently appointed Cricket Ombudsman Dr. Winston McGowan on the way forward.
Back in December of 2014, the GCB had sent out a release stating that it will be holding is elections for office bearers in January of 2015.
This was before the Minister of Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, in keeping with the provisions of the Cricket Administration Bill (CAB) which was passed in parliament last year and signed into law by President Donald Ramotar named Dr. Mc Gowan as the Cricket Ombudsman. According to the CAB, the Cricket Ombudsman has the task of calling the GCB elections.
Asked yesterday whether the BCB will participate at the upcoming AGM of the GCB set for January 25 or wait and see if the Cricket Ombudsman will set a new date for the GCB AGM, an official of the BCB told Stabroek Sports that the board will be seeking supervision from Dr. McGowan regarding the electoral process and the CAB.
Already the BCB and the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) have held elections for 2015 but the Demerara Cricket Board’s (DCB) AGM according to reports is set for after the GCB AGM.
The ECB held its elections last Sunday and its President Fizul Bacchus was returned unopposed.
However, Prince Holder, President of the North Essequibo Cricket Committee has alleged that the AGM was not held in accordance with the constitution of the ECB and said he plans to write the Cricket Ombudsman on the matter.
Berbice who held their AGM more than a week ago saw Anil Beharry being elected the new president, taking over the mantle from Keith Foster. When asked about the legality of their AMG, the BCB official indicated that their board’s election was run in transparent manner and has not come under any form of scrutiny so far.
