A Cotton Tree Village, West Berbice farmer died on Saturday morning after he was struck down by an allegedly speeding vehicle on the No.8 Village Public Road.
Stabroek News understands that the driver is in police custody at the Fort Wellington police station.
Sixty-two-year-old Megnauth Seetaram called `Bazaar’ of Lot 8 Section ‘A’ Harbanspoor Dam was crossing the road to get to his farm when he was hit down by a black Tundra coming from Georgetown. The accident reportedly occurred around 10 am.
According to his adopted daughter, Savitri Rengasamy, the now deceased man left home to go to his farm to pick plantains.
According to reports, the occupants of the vehicle stopped and also assisted to take the man to the hospital. Relatives stated that the man sustained head and internal injuries.
The family also said that when they visited the scene tyre tracks were evident where the vehicle swerved on the road. The vehicle has been impounded and is currently at the station.
The man is survived by his son who resides in Suriname, his adopted daughter, his wife of 28 years and other relatives and friends.
