Family of Friendship man killed in accident awaiting word on accused

The family of Abdul Azad Hamied say they are keenly awaiting word on the fate of the driver of the allegedly speeding car that claimed his life two weeks ago on the Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

Hamied, 54, of Lot 4 Friendship Public Road died on January 5 just as he was on his way to a shop to buy bread. He was about to cross the road when motorcar PCC 9494 hit him off his bicycle causing him to be catapulted some 25 feet. He was picked up and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he died a few hours later.

When Stabroek News spoke with the dead man’s son-in-law, Kumar Lakeram yesterday, he said that at about 8:30 on the fateful night he received a call from someone saying that Hamied was involved in an accident and was at the hospital. They arrived there immediately after. It “seems like the hits were severe because blood was pouring out his mouth and he was breathing unusual”, Lakeram said. The man recalled that at about 11:30 PM he was pronounced dead.

“Two days after the accident we keep cooperating with the police and I keep asking them what is going to happen with the (driver) and the story but the police just tell me that they will continue investigations and after that the Director of Public Prose-cutions will deal with it”, a disappointed Lakeram said.

He told this newspaper that to date they haven’t heard anything about anyone being charged or being taken before the court for his father-in-law’s death but what he does know is on the last day that he visited the police station he didn’t see the car in the compound.

Upon enquiring he was informed that the car was examined and the driver was released on $100,000 bail. Lakeram said trying to investigate who the driver was proved futile also since he was told by the police that they could not give out any such information.

“Nobody didn’t even come after everything and say sorry or nothing”, Lakeram said.

Hamied’s daughter, Shareema Azad Hamied, told this newspaper that she was very close to her father since her other sister resides overseas. “My father was just a farmer. He didn’t had nothing much but was me and my sister that had to see what best we could do to send him off”, Shareema said.

Abdul was laid to rest on January 9 according to Muslim rites.
