Two more cases of suicide have rocked the Essequibo Coast with two young men dying by hanging and ingesting poison on Sunday.
According to information received by Stabroek News, 23-year-old Leroy Cornelius of Lima, Essequibo Coast and formerly of Moruca hanged himself with his belt on Sunday around 11 am.
Speaking with Stabroek News, the dead man’s sister Nalinie Cornelius said he had been drinking with friends but left and went home.
“When he come he told his little niece that he was drunk and then he pick up his towel and went to bathe,” she said.
His body was found hanging shortly after by an older sister, Tracy Cornelius.
“After we find him we see that he tried to hang himself three times with two belts but it didn’t work and then he use his belt and tie it to a rope,” the distressed Nalinie Cornelius said.
She surmised that her brother may have been stressed out about delayed payments by his employer.
Meanwhile, in the village of Hoff Van Aurich, 16-year-old Rabindra Lall, a student of Abrams Zuil Secondary School also succumbed on Sunday. He had reportedly ingested a poisonous substance some two weeks ago.
