The remote Amerindian community of Masakenari in Deep South Rupununi received a boost from the government in the form of $10 million to develop a trail leading into the community.
According to a report from the Government Information Agency (GINA), a cheque for $10 million was handed over to the Toshao Paul Chekema by the Minister Pauline Sukhai last weekend.
This project, GINA said, was as a result of the request from members of the community to enhance connectivity and the “Govern-ment’s continued effort to improve the road networks in the Amerindian communities.”
Further, the Minister said, the nature of this project will stimulate employment in the community because it will be “handled directly by members the community” as opposed to the tender process. More than that, Sukhai said her ministry will support the construction of a road linking the communities of Masakenari and Parabara.
