Secondary school students were yesterday awarded for their participation in the Art and Essay Competitions held in observation of Caricom Energy Week.
The competitions, facilitated annually by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), sought to bring awareness to the importance of energy conservation and tackling climate change.
The distribution of the prizes and trophies to the winners of this year’s competition was held yesterday at the Guyana International Conference Centre, at Liliendaal.
The essay topic was: “The importance of sustainable energy through climate, environmental and economic resilience in Guyana.” Queen’s College Upper Sixth Form student Lawrence Fung earned the first prize. Aliya Rihanna Ali, a Form 5 Business student of the St Joseph High and Vidya Munilall, a Form 4 Business student of the Abram Zuil Secondary took the second and third prizes, respectively.
In the art competition, students were challenged to express their energy ideas on various topics by putting it into a pictorial presentation. Taking the first prize for this was the artwork titled, “Sustainable Energy, a bright tomorrow,” by Lisa Sawh of the Bishops’ High School. School of the Nations students Alexandra Bisram, with “Environmental Watch,” and Lin Sai, with “Goodness of Nature,” took the second and third prizes, respectively, in the art competition.
Other participating schools present yesterday included Dolphin Secondary, Uitvlugt Secondary and St Rose’s High. Teachers from various schools also received certificates of recognition.
