Marlon Williams kicked off the local cycling season in fine style yesterday, winning the feature 35-lap event of the 22nd annual Ricks and Sari Agro Industries 11-race programme.
In perfect conditions for racing at the National Park, Williams of newly formed Team Evolution, took pole position in one hour, 20 minutes and 11 seconds.
Decked out in a crisp black and white team kit, Williams led fellow national riders Alanzo Greaves (Roraima Bikers) and Hamza Eastman (Team Coco’s) onto the podium while Mark Harris (Team Coco’s), Alonzo Ambrose (Team Alanis) and Harris’ club mate, Chris Holder, rounded out the top six rewarding positions.
“It’s the first win for the season and I feel good about that” said Williams who also won the feature event last year.
Team Evolution’s captain is looking forward to more wins as the season progresses.
“We are aiming to be the number one team at the end of the year, we are looking to change things in cycling hence the name evolution.”
Greaves, Harris and Ambrose made up the group that moved away from the main bunch in the 10th lap. The three wheelsmen sustained their lead for the next 22 laps until Eastman and Williams connected.
On the final 200 metres, Williams shed his break away mate, Harris and Ambrose and then last year’s runner up road race champion outsprinted Greaves to take the season opener.
Before the signature event of the programme organized by Hassan Mohamed, they were 10 other events. Here is a summary of them:
