Uitvlugt edged out Showtime 3-2 on sudden death kicks after normal time ended 1-1 when the group stage of the inaugural Greatest Guinness of the Streets West Demerara leg commenced Saturday.
Played at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, Showtime got off to the perfect start in the shoot-out as Toine Lopes netted from the mark in their first kick. Uitvlugt then fell behind as they missed their first attempt from the distance. Kaide King would then make it 2-0 for Showtime as he scored in their second strike from the mark. Uitvlugt would then pull one back as Colin Benjamin scored in their second allotted kick.
Needing simply to score in their final attempt to seal the win, Showtime would fail to hit the target, handing their opponents a lifeline back into the fixture. Uitvlugt would quickly capitalize on their recent fortune, forcing the matchup in the sudden death realm as Brian Accra scored.
It would then go from bad to worse for Showtime as they missed the target once more in their first attempt in the sudden death round. Uitvlugt would once again take advantage of Showtime’s failure as Owen McGarrell netted from the distance to seal the comeback win.
Prior to the shoot-out, Delon Layne pushed Showtime into the lead in the seventh minute, lashing his effort into the right corner from the centre of the field.
However, Uitvlugt would level proceedings four minutes onward as McGarrell netted. In the sixth fixture, home side Pouderoyen Showstoppers sent an early warning to the field, downing West Side Ballers 2-0
Dexroy Adams gave the winners the early lead in the sixth minute with a simple finish into the empty net from the centre of the field, after the ball rolled into his path.
He would then seal the win in the 18th minute to complete his brace, lashing his right footed strike down the centre of the goal after collecting a left sided Marvin Josiah pass just outside the centre of the penalty area.
The second matchup of the night saw DeKenderen crushing Vergenoegen All-Stars 4-0. Darrel Alexis broke the deadlock in the seventh minute, controlling a lobbed pass between two defenders with his chest on the left side, before finishing to the lower right corner of the net.
Stephon Dickson would then make it 2-0 in the 13th minute, stabbing his effort to the right side of the goal from just outside the centre of the box.
DeKenderen would further extend their lead as Ulric Bourne got into the goal rush in the 16th minute, rifling his right footed attempt into the back of the net, after collecting a flicked on right sided pass from sibling Lyndon Bourne within the centre of the field.
The result would be completed three minutes onward compliments on an own goal, the ball deflecting off the leg of the final defender and rolling into the right hand corner.
Also registering a comprehensive victory in the penultimate fixture of the night was Den Amstel who defeated Admiral United 3-0. Rondel Hutson opened the scoring in the seventh minute following a swift counterattack.
Hutson would make his presence felt once more as he netted his second in the 19th minute, directing his first time effort down the centre of the goal.
Jeffrey Perreira would then seal the three points in the 24th minute compliments of an easy finish to the back of the net, after collecting a left side pass following a two-on-one situation with the final defender.
In the fourth matchup, Majee Street brushed aside Demerara Speedboat 2-0. A powerfully struck Morvin Henry effort down the middle of the goal from the centre of the field broke the stalemate in the second minute. Kerron Schmidt would put the fixture beyond the reach of Demerara Speedboat one minute later, finishing to the lower right corner from the centre of the park.
In the event’s opener, Brothers United squeaked past Golden Stars by a 1-0 margin. Donford Williams created history as he netted the first goal of the tourney in the 19th minute, placing his first time effort down the middle of the woodwork from just outside the centre of the area.
In other results, Patentia Street Ballers defeated Raiders 2-0 in the third fixture of the night. An own goal and a Noel Walker strike in the fifth and 24th minutes correspondingly separated the sides.
Also getting their campaign off to the perfect start was Jetty who gained a walkover from Young Warriors. Due to the walkover, Young Warriors have been replaced by Police for the remainder of the tourney.
Prior to the commencement of the event, Regional Democratic Chairman Julius Faerber opened the tourney with ceremonial first kick, netting his strike from the half way mark.
The second round of group action continues tomorrow at the same location with eight matchups.
Winners of the event will receive $300,000 and the championship trophy while the second place side will collect $150,000 and the runners-up accolade. The third and fourth place finishers will collect $100,000 and $75,000 respectively.
