A man who allegedly impersonated a police officer on the Corentyne during the course of last week was yesterday placed on $80,000 bail when he appeared in the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Ronald Balgobin called ‘Coolie Boy’, 20, of lot 35 Reliance, East Canje appeared before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga.
Balgobin was charged with impersonation of a police officer and collecting money under false pretence.
He was not required to plead to the charges.
It was alleged that on January 21 at Bloomfield, Corentyne, Berbice Balgobin presented himself to Jose Teixeira as ‘Police Inspector Singh’. The same day, he allegedly falsely and deceitfully collected $10,000 Guyana from Teixeira. He is expected to return to court on February 2.
According to reports, Balgobin had stopped drivers on the Corentyne who were not wearing seat belts and took money from them.
