The Guyana Elections Commission’s longest serving commissioner, Dr Keshav `Bud’ Mangal has resigned.
Gecom’s Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally said that Mangal, who is in his 80’s, was present at the dawning of a new era and worked alongside the commission when it was a temporary body for the 1992 and 1997 elections. He was the only remaining commissioner from the group that served in the historic 1992 general elections. He came on permanently in 2000 when the commission was established in its present form under the Constitution (Amendment) Act No.2 of 2000.
Mangal served as one of the nominees of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.
Mangal’s departure, due to ill health, means that a new commissioner will need to be selected by the PPP/C government prior to the election.
