Dear Editor,
The New Year arrived for most residents in my area in torment and anger. For me it was my first experience of literally thunder and earthquake in one’s home. The nuisance emanated from music equipment located near my usually quiet house.
This assault lasted for 12 hours on Old Years Night and was only stopped at 3 am New Year’s morning after numerous calls from residents to both Reliance and New Amsterdam police stations. It continued from 9am-7pm New Year’s Day and was only stopped after consistent calls to the police again.
Everyone loves some kind of music but it is the loudness that matters, and strict measures together with stern action should be applied to curtail this lawlessness.
While we do have laws formulated against noise nuisance they are begging for strict implementing and enforcing.
The aggravation becomes so unbearable that it is encouraging those affected to take their own action which may not have pleasant consequences. What of the incident that caused one resident to have his vehicles and house damaged as a result of pleading for sanity to prevail when affected? In this instance the revellers were throwing thunder king explosives at a street lamp, obviously to damage it for whatever reason – maybe to assault my premises or rob me having been robbed on 5 occasions and fortunate to avoid two other attempts at least.
Reports of noise nuisance have been consistent and pervasive countrywide, and yet again I am questioning why stern action is not employed to restrain it knowing the grave amount of discomfort resulting.
Why can’t the authorities command respect in relation to such a simple problem? Why are they allowing a few persons to make themselves merry to the discomfort of the majority? It is obvious idiocy and illiteracy pushes this obscenity, and those intelligent ones entrusted to ensure decency should act now.
Ban those big boxes or seize the equipment if necessary to restore order. Giving some permission to play loud music but with moderation is laughable. There is no word like moderation when alcohol and drugs control the buttons on the equipment.
The authorities need to show some spine and concern in this instance and let this be the last appeal or complaint. No one, no one must ever again be tormented in this way. This is not the Wild West. Any permission must be destined for the beaches, bushes, outlying areas, not residential areas, period. But then again, permission is illegal.
The Fountain of Life Church in Betsy Ground continues to be a nuisance despite complaints.
When will it all end?
Yours faithfully,
M Sookraj
