Vergenoegen giants Slingerz FC has made the biggest splash in the traditionally quiet January transfer period, reacquiring talismanic winger and former captain Dwain Jacobs from arch-rivals Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United.
Jacobs ,who was the marquee signing of Slingerz FC during the club’s official launching, initially donned the colours of Alpha United. He would return to the Georgetown-based unit during the January transfer period of 2013, following a stint with the Vergenoegen side.
Speaking exclusively to Stabroek Sports, the left sided winger said “I never wanted to leave in the first place, it’s something I started. I was the first player signed to the team and the team lives with more love and unity. I feel much more at home at Slingerz FC”.
According to Jacobs “Alpha has a great team but the togetherness is not there. The reception that I got from some players is like they didn’t welcome me back to the team with open arms. The same way I felt when we started the team (Slingerz), the love is still there.
“Some of the players’ attitude towards me was not like before when I was there. The coach (Alpha United) welcomed me back and the management staff was good but I cannot play under conditions like that, I need to feel comfortable and know that people are supporting me all around. I am a comfortable now.”
Questioned if the likelihood exists for a possible return to the ‘Hammers’, the Golden Jaguar International said:” I am turning 28 next week and you never know. Right now I am hoping to get them (Slingerz FC) to the CONCACAF Club Championships coming next year.
“We have to play in the National League this year and have to finish in the top two. We are hoping to go to the CONCACAF championship because that was the boss’s main aim when we started the club.
“The players that were there before and with the inclusion of players that we have acquired, we have a fair chance to get there. We will make sure we try our best to win all the tournaments that are coming up this year.”
