High up on the grid of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) programme this season is the acceleration of the process of upgrading the South Dakota Circuit to international specifications.
This is according to president of the club Johnny Carpenter.
“We are looking forward to taking it up a notch this year, you have to have the facilities if you want to attract the big boys of the sport,” Carpenter reasoned yesterday.
Carpenter was speaking in his first interview after being re-elected to his post unopposed when the body held its AGM on Monday night.
“Barbados and Jamaica have upgraded” said Carpenter, “They have a more competitive track and we will not be left in the rearview”.
According to the GMR&SC incumbent, the The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA, English: International Automobile Federation) “did a draft proposal for a new track with all the facilities and this year we look forward to start the fund raising to make that a reality.”
Carpenter revealed that once the venue is upgraded to an FIA standard “we will attract competitions like the Formula 3.”
Meanwhile, at the AGM, Carpenter was returned unopposed along with most of the previous members of the GMR&SC executive after a stellar 2014 in which the local daredevils were able to retain the coveted country award of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC).

Carpenter also disclosed that the GMR&SC executive will assemble for their first meeting today to plan their activities for the season which will include Endurance races, drag meets, national competitions and of course their leg in the flagship CMRC event in November.
The first local meet is scheduled for February 8 at the South Dakota Circuit, it will be an Endurance event. (Emmerson Campbell)
